About the Trust |
KALPATARU VIDYA SAMSTHE
(R), TIPTUR (ESTD.1961)
Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe is one of the premier
educational trusts doing yeoman service to the
rural people with its various educational
institutions. It was established in 1961.
Being geographically secluded from bigger
cities, and having no civic amenities during the
early 1960’s, Tiptur was deprived of
institutions for higher education. Students
aspiring to pursue tertiary education, had to
inevitably leave the town and explore Mysore or
Bangalore, which was fiscally not a viable
proposition to the local poor. Their ambition
would have continued to remain a distant dream,
but for some extraordinary visionaries.
Though the conception of founding an educational
institution in Tiptur was fostered by
philanthropists from various sections of the
society, two names that stand out distinctly,
head and shoulders above the rest are, Sri A.C.
Pallagatti and J.R. Mahalingaiah.
Sri A.C. Pallagatti, a generous benefactor,
donated a huge sum of seed money to build
Kalpataru College under the organization
Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe. Kalpataru college came
into existence in the year 1961, spearheaded by
the founder Principal Prof. J R Mahalingaiah,
whose dedication and vision paved the way for
the much needed Pre-University and degree
college, with the standards at par with city
colleges. Within a very short span of time, the
reputation of the college grew in leaps and
bounds.
The college that made a modest beginning with
merely 270 students and three class rooms has
now flourished into a huge constellation of
seven premium star institutions laid out in a
sprawling green campus with well-equipped
laboratories, automated libraries and a number
of ICT ready classrooms.
As the strength of the institution grew day by
day, it was found sensible to bifurcate the
college for better governance and enhanced
academic excellence. Thus Kalpataru College was
bifurcated in 1982 into “Kalpataru Science
College” and “Pallagatti Adavappa Arts and
Commerce College”. Following the mandate of the
government, it became inevitable to separate the
Pre-University course from the tertiary courses,
that led to the onset of “Kalpataru PU College”
in 2001, which offered arts, commerce and
science streams.
Now Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe governs
institutions from Pre - School to Post Graduate
level. They are:
1. Kalpataru First Grade Science College
2. Pallagatti Adavappa Arts and Commerce First
Grade College
3. Kalpataru Pre University college
4. Kalpataru Institute of Technology
5. Kalpataru Montessori house of Children
6. Kalpataru Central School
7. Kalpataru College of Education
8. Kalpataru Post Graduation Centre and Research
Centre
Presently Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe is guided by
the President Sri P.K.Thipperudrappa and
supported by other members.

Down the Memory Lane
Sri. Pallagatti C. Adavappa. was the Bagheeratha
who brought the river of knowledge into a
parched land that would eternally irrigate and
help to produce bountiful harvest each year.
Sri. Pallagatti C. Adavappa, strongly resolved
to translate his dream into a reality, as he
knew propagation of education would improve the
living standards of the local people in
particular and the progress of the entire town
in general.
Besides contributing 1.5 lakh rupees to
accomplish the mission, Pallagatti C. Adavappa
motivated the people to join hands with him in
the year 1961. People willingly came forward to
donate their lands for the institution. The
entire community supported the cause.
J R Mahalingaiah, the founder Principal, was
instrumental in tapping financial resources from
the business men and farmers for all the
developmental activities of the college.
The college was named “Kalpataru”, as suggested
by Rashtra Kavi Dr. K V Puttappa, a recipient of
Jnana Peetha award. Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe, was
registered on the 30th day of December 1961 as
an educational Society. However, the college
became functional in the academic year 1962-63.
Having no building of their own to run the
institution, classes were conducted in the newly
constructed Government Girls’ High school with a
modest strength of 270 students, on 12th
November 1962. Since then there has been no
turning back.
Besides the infrastructural development, JR
Mahalingaiah appointed resourceful lecturers who
were dedicated and sincere. He was also
successful in bringing an American professor,
Prof Selden Menefee, for ten months, as a
visiting professor under the faculty exchange
programme. The following year, he managed to
bring Prof. Clyde Putnam and Mrs. Esther Putnam
to teach mathematics.
The untimely death of Prof. J R Mahalingaiah in
the year 1967 and in quick succession, the
demise of Pallagatti Adavappa in the year 1969
hampered the progress of the college for a
while. However, JRM was ably succeeded by Prof.
T D Subbanna who brought things back to
normalcy.
Within a short span of six months, the college
had its first building ever, on its own
sprawling land of 36 acres. Though the college
was raw, and inadequate in several aspects, it
managed to get a tenth rank in PUC, in the very
first year and drew the attention of the
academia. Thus it grew from strength to strength
with the benchmark of quality education.

Message from the principal
“A Vision is not just a picture of what
could be; instead it is an appeal to our better
selves and a call to become something more”.
The website showcases the wealth of experiences
we offer the students and gives them a wider
appreciation for their wonderful work. We hope
you enjoy your visit and return regularly to
check out our latest news. Dear students and
stakeholders, warm Greetings! It is with a
profound sense of humility and privilege that I
address this message as the newly designated
Principal in this prestigious institute. I feel
truly fumbled that I have been bestowed with the
great responsibility of leading this institution
to the dazzling and sparkling shores of renown
and grandeur. “Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe” synonyms
to instilling discipline and is a reflection
aiming to groom, nurture and churnout the best
in its potential knowledge seeker who are
entrusted to our care. We firmly believe in
gives our learners strong values along with a
set a wings that may carry them far and wide.
Hence we prepare and mould them first as social
beings and then scholars. We leave no stone
unturned to awaken the latent talents of our
students and hone them to perfection. The
pandemic caused by Covid-19 has inevitably
brought in a word-wide unprecedented eruption in
all walks of our life and has not spared any
sector of the economy. Changing with the change
and ‘problem’ well-handled could be an
‘opportunity’ in disguise is the novel lesion
that this pandemic has taught to all of us.
Despite all these challenges, our academic
mentors are mindful of constantly making every
effort to reach out the teaching – learning
needs of the students. Though times do not last
for long. Adversity will make you reaffirm to
change your goals, remain optimistic and
creatively thrive the situation.
With Best Regards,
Dr.G.N. Umesh
